What is eco-friendly screen-printing?
Eco-friendly screen-printing means that sustainable measures are taken throughout the screen-printing process. We use a small, family run printer that uses non-plastisol and water based inks. The result is a solvent free, sustainable printing process. Furthermore, formaldehyde discharge is not used when printing with water based inks, and energy use and vehicle carbon emissions are offset through TerraPass.
What is plastisol ink?
Plastisol is a commonly used type of ink for garment silkscreening. While the ink is very resilient to wear and wash, it consists of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a widely used plastic found in construction materials such as vinyl siding, pipes, and electric wiring. The printing process is very energy-intensive process, requiring the plastisol ink to be cured at high temperatures as well as solvents to clean the screens after they are used.
What is water based ink?
Water based ink does not contain polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and is a non-toxic, more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional silkscreen inks. When used on a garment, the ink has a softer, more lightweight feel than plastisol inks. Furthermore, water based inks can air dry after printing and do not require chemical solvents for cleaning.
What are low-impact dyes?
Low-impact, fiber-reactive dyes used by our manufacturer are petroleum-based, synthetic dyes with a higher than average absorption rate than natural dyes (plants, minerals, animal based). This means less water is required in the rinse process and less dye runs off in the water. They contain no heavy metals (chrome, copper, zinc) and do not require toxic chemical mordants to fix them to the fiber. These dyes are accepted by the Organic Trade Associations Fiber Standards as well as the new Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS).
How do you determine your prices?
Some people charge $15, others $50, for a tshirt. Go figure. With an environmentally-conscious pretext, our goods are made and manufactured in the USA by local companies in small quantities. If we can’t find it locally, we search for a company that aligns with our philosophy. These steps along the production process can cause prices to increase.
